Chapter 12

Kevin blinked his eyes in disbelief. This cannot be happening, he thought. A vivid dream or not, what he was experiencing was beyond his wildest imagination, an out-of-body experience. Pinch yourself, it always works in the movies, he thought, but as he brought his right hand across his body, he noticed something odd.

This was not his body.

Where his thin arms and smooth hands typically were, now were arms with bulging muscles and rough, calloused hands more used to combat than that of a mouse click. With his hand, he reached up to touch his face and again found it was not familiar. His jaw was well defined, his face hardened. Kevin’s hand moved to his chest to discover rippling pectorals that he couldn’t dream of having.

Understanding washed over him – in this dream, he was not Kevin Brooks. He was Kier Antaras.

And while that was definitely important to him, the beings standing a few feet away took more of a priority than his new-found body.

And they were scarier in his dream than they were on a video game screen, Kevin thought.

“Kier Antaras, again we approach you for help.” The creature speaking was the one Kevin remembered as Kregoth. “We are saddened that we must resort to our mysticisms to bring you into our presence, but it is most important.”

The creature took a step toward Kevin, causing Kevin to stumble backwards. He lost his footing and fell to the floor. He quickly scrambled onto all fours and backed away from the approaching monster.

Kevin held up his hands as if to protect him from the grey-skinned creature. “Stay away from me,” he screamed in a voice that did nothing to cover his fear. He inched backward, away from what he feared most until he hit a cold, stone wall. He looked to his left, to his right, but found no place to go, and for the first time noticed he was in a grand, decorative hall. He must have lost himself briefly before he soon realized that the strange, gray creature has his eyes trained on him.

“What is this place?” Kevin asked breathlessly.

His question was not graced with a reply. Kregoth was soon joined by others of his kind, and they conversed in low tones, too soft for Kevin to understand. Not that it mattered – it’s all a dream anyway, and how often do dreams make sense, he thought.

The Druzar broke off the conversation with his brethren. “You are very different than the last time we met, Kier Antaras,” Kregoth spoke solemnly. “What has happened to you?”

Kevin barely heard the creature – he was more amazed, surprised, at how vivid this dream was, the realism of it. He’d had dreams before where he’d woken up and couldn’t remember if what he had just experienced really happened, but this was something completely different.

A tremor shook the great hallway, snapping Kevin back from his mind’s wandering. “What was that?”

“Your friends, trying to make their way back,” the creature said, and then barked orders to his fellow Druzar.
